Economic Leader & Monetary Policy Expert 

Tom Barkin is the president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, a position he has held since 2018. 

Barkin serves on the Fed’s chief monetary policy body and the Federal Open Market Committee. He is also responsible for the Richmond Fed’s bank supervision and the Federal Reserve’s technology organization.

  • Barkin is “on the ground” continually in the Fed’s Fifth District, which covers South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Washington D.C., West Virginia and Maryland. His engagement in the region has brought real attention to areas in the Fifth District that are facing economic challenges.  

    Prior to joining the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Barkin was a senior partner and chief financial officer at McKinsey & Company, a worldwide management consulting firm. During this time, he also oversaw McKinsey’s offices in the southern United States. 

    Barkin earned his Bachelor’s, MBA, and law degrees from Harvard University.
